How to Fix Windows SplashID Desktop App Crashing on Launch?

My Windows SplashID Desktop app is crashing on launch

Step 1: Rename the Data Folder

  1. Open Windows File Explorer (Windows 8.x or higher) or Windows Explorer (for older Windows versions).

  2. Browse to Documents\SplashData\ and locate the SplashID folder.

  3. Right-click the folder name, choose Rename, and add .old to the end so it becomes SplashID.old.

Step 2: Update to the Latest Version

Download and install the latest version of SplashID Desktop from:
https://splashid.com/downloads.html

After installing, launch SplashID Desktop again and complete the guided setup.

Step 3: Restore Your Data

Depending on where your latest good data exists, use one of the following methods:

  • From the Cloud
If your records are up-to-date in SplashID Cloud, they will automatically download after setup.

  • From Android App

    1. In the SplashID Android app, go to Settings > Backup.

    2. Perform a WiFi sync with SplashID Desktop.

    3. Set sync preferences to Handheld overwrites Desktop if needed.

  • From iPhone/iPad App

    1. In the SplashID iOS/iPadOS app, go to Settings > Send Records.

    2. Email yourself all records as a vID file.

    3. Perform a WiFi sync with SplashID Desktop.

    4. If needed, set sync preferences to Handheld overwrites Desktop.

  • From Backup vID File

    1. Locate the backup vID file you want to restore.

    2. Double-click the file to import it into SplashID Desktop.

    3. Enter the password that was set when the backup was created.

Auto-backup files can usually be found in:
Documents\SplashData\SplashID.old\Backup\

Step 4: Check for Custom Data Folder Locations

If renaming the default data folder did not work, your SplashID data may be stored in a different location.

  • Find your active SplashID data folder.

  • Rename it to SplashID.old.

  • Relaunch SplashID Desktop.
This will reset the app and allow it to create a fresh data directory.
