How to sync data back from 8.4.x Cloud/Web app via CLEAN reinstall - Mac Desktop (Cloud Sync)

Learn how to completely uninstall and reinstall SplashID Safe 8.4.x on Mac Desktop using Cloud Sync.

The step-by-step instructions include backup, uninstall, clearing preferences, reinstall, and syncing with the SplashID Web app to restore your data.

When to Use This Guide

Follow these steps if your SplashID Safe 8.4.x Mac Desktop app:

  • Crashes or quits unexpectedly with an error

  • Does not accept your password

  • Is using the wrong email ID

  • Shows incorrect or incomplete data compared to your Web app

Before starting, make sure your records are correct and complete on the SplashID Safe 8.4.0 Web app.

Also check if the Mac Desktop app login screen has your email address displayed as shown below in the sample screenshot.


Step 1: Backup Data (If Possible)

  • Export your data to a vID or SVID file from the Mac Desktop app.

  • If you cannot log in to the Desktop app, skip this step.

  • Quit the SplashID Mac Desktop app if it is still running.

Step 2: Uninstall the Desktop App

  • Open your Applications folder.

  • Drag the SplashID Safe 8.4.x app to the Trash Can.

  • Remove any SplashID icons from the Mac Dock.

  • If more than one copy of the app exists in Applications, delete them all.

Step 3: Rename the Data Folder

  • Go to ~/Library/Containers/

  • Find the folder named com.splashdata.splashidmac (or SplashID Safe on macOS Big Sur or newer).

  • Rename it to com.splashdata.splashidmac_OLD or SplashID Safe_OLD.

  • If “_OLD” already exists, rename to _OLD2 or _OLD3.

  • If you find related folders such as com.splashdata.splashidsafe, SplashID, or SplashID Safe, rename them the same way.

Accessing the Hidden Library Folder on newer macOS versions:

  • In Finder, click the Go menu.

  • Hold the Option (Alt) key to reveal Library and click it.

  • Alternatively, use Shift + Command + G and type ~/Library/Containers/.

Step 4: Delete Preferences Files

Remove any old preferences from ~/Library/Preferences/:

  • com.splashdata.splashidmac

  • com.splashdata.splashid

  • Any other files containing “splashid” in their names

Step 5: Reinstall SplashID Safe Mac Desktop

  • Download the latest version (8.4.5, released January 2025) from the SplashID downloads page.

  • Install and then eject the installer from your Mac desktop.

Step 6: Run and Log In

  • Open the newly installed SplashID Safe 8.4.5 app.

  • You should see the setup screen.

  • Log in with your existing email and password.

  • If 2-factor authentication is enabled, enter the code sent by email or SMS (note: SMS option is being phased out).

  • If the setup screen does not appear and you still see the old login screen, repeat Steps 3 and 4.

Important Notes:

Step 7: Sync Your Data

  • Once logged in, perform a sync.

  • Your data from the SplashID Web app will be re-synced to your Mac Desktop app.

  • You may re-add SplashID Safe to your Mac Dock for quick access.
