This guide explains how to perform a full or “clean” reinstall of the SplashID Safe 8.4.1 Desktop app for Windows.
Before starting, when you open the PC Desktop app you should see the Login screen with your email address filled in. Your own email address will appear instead of the example shown in our screenshots.
Back up your data
If possible, back up your records from SplashID Safe Desktop to a vID file.
From the menu, go to Export.
Save both a .vid
and an .svid
file if you can.
If you already have a backup or your records are available in the mobile or web apps, you can skip this.
Exit the SplashID Safe PC Desktop app if it is running.
Uninstall the app
Go to Control Panel → Programs and Features.
Uninstall SplashID Safe Desktop as you would any other Windows program.
Rename data folders
Go to Documents\SplashData\
.
Rename the folder SplashID
to SplashID.old
(or SplashID.old2
if one already exists).
Rename the folder SplashID.8
to SplashID.8.old
.
This preserves the data without deleting it.
Instructions for navigating:
Open This PC or File Explorer.
Go to Documents → SplashData.
Locate the SplashID
or SplashID.8
folders and rename them.
Delete SplashID registry entries
Open the Run dialog (Windows Key + R
) and type regedit
.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SplashData\
and delete the folders SplashID Desktop
, SplashID
, and SplashID Safe
(skip if missing).
Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\SplashData, Inc\
and delete the SplashID Safe
folder.
Close Registry Editor.
Reinstall the latest app
Download the latest SplashID Safe Desktop (v8.4.1) from www.splashid.com/downloads.
Install the app.
First launch after reinstall
The app should show the Welcome screen and ask for your email ID again.
Log in with your existing account (no activation email is required).
If you have two-factor authentication enabled, enter the code.
If you still see the old Login screen with your email already filled in, repeat steps 4 and 5.
Restore your data
If you use Cloud Sync, your data will sync back automatically.
If you use WiFi Sync, first delete sample data, then either:
Import the .vid
/.svid
backup you created earlier, or
Sync from your mobile app with sync settings set to Device Overwrites Desktop.
For iOS 14.x–18.x users, ensure you enable Local Network Access for SplashID Safe to resolve WiFi sync issues. See: WiFi sync troubleshooting.
To back up your mobile app data, see: SplashID Safe 8.x Mobile backups.
Adjust backup settings
Increase the number of backups stored by the Desktop app from the default 30 to between 60–120.
Instructions are here: SplashID Safe 8.x Desktop backups.
