The information below applies to the latest SplashID Safe 8.4.5/8.4.1 Desktop apps (Mac 8.4.5, PC 8.4.1) and was last updated in August 2025.
SplashID Safe Desktop apps (PC and Mac) support both automatic and manual backups. The available options may vary depending on the app version, platform, and sync mode used (No Sync, WiFi Sync, or Cloud Sync).
The PC Desktop app runs on Windows 7 or newer.
Automatic local backups are created every time you quit the app (unless disabled in Settings).
Starting with version 8.3.0 (July 2020), backups are customizable:
Choose between 7 and 9999 backups.
Default is 30 backups with 1 backup per day.
A range of 60–120 backups is recommended.
You can disable automatic backups, but this is not recommended.
Older versions (8.1.1) created only 5 backups and did not keep backups in Cloud Sync mode.
Backup folder location (default):
C:\Users\[your Windows username]\Documents\Splashdata\SplashID.8\Backup\
If you changed the location in Settings, backups will be stored in your custom folder.
Update to the latest version (8.4.1):
Download SplashID Desktop
(Export your current data to a vID file before upgrading.)
Use the Export menu in the main Application menu (works with all sync modes).
Or use the Backup menu (works only with WiFi Sync or No Sync).
If the app is empty, use the Import menu in the main Application menu.
If the app contains data you don’t need, delete it first, then import.
The Mac Desktop app runs on macOS 10.13 High Sierra or newer.
Versions 8.1.0 and later keep local backups for all sync modes.
Backups are created on quitting the app.
Limited to 26 regular backups plus unlimited weekly backups (one per week, but no total cap).
Older 8.0.x versions did not keep backups when Cloud Sync was enabled.
Backup folder locations (hidden system folders):
macOS 10.15 Catalina or older:
~/Library/Containers/com.splashdata.splashidmac/Data/Library/SplashID Safe/Backup/
macOS 11 Big Sur or newer:
~/Library/Containers/SplashID Safe/Data/Library/SplashID Safe/Backup/
How to access:
In Finder, hold Option (Alt), click Go > Library, then navigate to the folder above.
Or use Go > Go to Folder (Shift + Command + G) and paste the path.
On Mac, the backup folder location cannot be changed.
Use the Export menu in the File menu (works with all sync modes).
Or use the Backup menu (works only with WiFi Sync or No Sync).
If the app is empty, use the Import menu in the File menu.
If the app contains unwanted data, delete it first, then import.
To protect your backups, copy them regularly to additional safe locations. For example:
USB flash drives (preferably more than one)
External HDD/SSD or NAS/DAS systems
Cloud services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, OneDrive, Box, pCloud
Spare SD cards (if your computer has a card reader)
Another computer on your local network (without SplashID installed)
An older phone/tablet or spare device connected via USB
Performing this extra step weekly or biweekly ensures you won’t lose months or years of backup history in case of a system failure.
If you use Cloud Sync, our servers also create automatic weekly backups:
A new backup is created every Monday.
Up to 5 weekly backups are kept if no Master Backup is set.
If a Master Backup is set, 4 weekly backups plus 1 Master Backup are stored.
The Master Backup is permanent and never overwritten.
These backups are not available for No Sync or WiFi Sync users.
